Today we started a new unit on the art of Africa!
If you were absent please turn in a vocab page to me asap! This can be done on any piece of paper. You need to have the word, definition, an illustration and then use the word in a sentence. Bust: A sculpture of the head and shoulders of a person Ivory: the tusk of an elephant used in some African art Pigment: Matter used to color or dye something Apprenticeship: A time in a persons life spent learning a craft or trade from an expert We will be creating masks, mud cloths and batiks based on artwork we look at from ancient African cultures. Students are currently learning about the art of ancient Islam. They will be looking at illustrations from the Koran and at the architecture such as The Dome of the Rock.
Students are focusing on the idea of rotational symmetry and Illustration. We will create illustrations that show the difference between the literal and figurative meanings of popular sayings and phrases. We will create rotational mosaics using clay and beads. We will create paper mosaics showing one line symmetry in the arabesque style. We will create a design for a building that showcases the elements of architecture we focus on. Our essential questions for this unit are: Why are illustrations important to a story? Do we need them? and Why do architects choose to decorate buildings? Does it make a building better? 4th graders are wrapping up their unit on the Middle Ages.
We will complete our radially symmetrical designs with colored pencil, create a piece of colorful watercolor paper and then make a special radial print. We will review our vocabulary and have a quiz on the art of the middle ages. This is not something students can really study for, it is based on in-class projects and discussion. This week we will complete our tapestries and start focusing on the architectural elements of cathedrals.
Cathedral- a large important church Spire- the point on a steeple Pointed Arch- an arch that comes to a point at the top Flying Buttress- a supportive arch We will complete our vocabulary worksheet on these words and start a few examples of stained glass using paper techniques. Now that we have finished weaving we will work on a new type of tapestry. Using burlap and yarn we will create a fancy letter with a border using the back stitch or running stitch.
Students are weaving away! Over, under, over, under... we are also listening to the story Robin Hood!
