We will then take pastel and draw animals that are important to us just as the prehistoric people drew animals who were important to them.
This week we are working on our cave paintings! We will be taking our cut out hands and then painting around them to create the outline of our hand inspired by prehistoric peoples.

This week we are celebrating the awesome book by Peter H. Reynolds "The Dot" by creating a 1st grade mural!
We read the story "The Dot" and were then given post it notes and pastels to create a special dot! Then we got to stick them together to create a mural (a piece of art on a wall). This week we are practicing with scissors and glue. We are taking our shapes from last week and creating a shape friend Birthday party!
It is fun getting to design and decorate for the party. This week we are reviewing lines, shapes and colors. Students will be following along making correct choices for their colors (warm, cool, primary, secondary) and then creating the required lines (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) in the correct shapes (square, circle, rectangle, oval, square).
Next week we will cut out and glue our shapes to create a shape friend. This week students are being introduced to the art room and are drawing mini self-portraits as a way of getting to know students. Next week we will work on our personal portfolios where we will build a collection of all of our artworks!
Welcome to the art room at Monticello Academy! I hope you will make sure to check back often to see what your students are up to! Here is a copy of the disclosure document which covers grades, units and how to contact me. I look forward to getting to know you and your student this year! ![]()
This week students used their printing plates to print their sunflowers! They turned out great! Check out the artsonia page for examples!
http://www.artsonia.com/museum/gallery.asp?exhibit=959421 Students are currently learning about still life paintings and will be creating their own sunflower still life print series! Today kiddos drew at least two sunflowers with seeds, stem, leaves and petals.then they had to press their drawings into a styrofoam printing block. They are incredible! After reading "The Easter Egg" by Jan Brett students used pastel to create a special egg design.
They reviewed multiples lines from a discussion from last week: Straight, wavy, zig zag, heart line, castle, spiral and dashed. Students learned about multiples types of lines including a sprial. We read the book "Swirl by Swirl" and then created mini books that included drawings of animals we love, a spiral and the different things that have spirals in nature. The kids LOVED making these books!
